Suffering From Infertility? Consider Your Options

It is a desire for most people to have a child at some point in their life. Therefore, it is crucial for a person to understand fertility issues as early as possible. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive within one year of frequent intercourse. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), infertility affects approximately 10 percent of women in the US. Research indicates that aging affects fertility in women. They are born with a specific number of eggs in their ovaries. As they get older, the number and the quality of the eggs decrease. After the age of thirty, the chances of conceiving decrease by between three to five percent. The extent is even higher after the age of forty. Below are some of the causes of infertility in women.

• Damaged Fallopian Tubes — Fertilization takes place in the fallopian tube. Therefore, if damaged, the contact between the sperm and the egg does not occur. Causes of damage to the fallopian tube include certain sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory diseases, ectopic pregnancy, etc.

• Hormonal Imbalance — Hormones plays a vital role in the fertilization process and maintaining the pregnancy. The inability to regulate hormonal levels leads to the overproduction or underproduction of essential hormones that control fertility. The leading cause of hormonal imbalances is harm to the glandular.

• Cervical Problems — After ejaculation, the sperm must pass through the cervix into the uterus. The cervix contains mucus that provides an optimal environment and support for the sperm to swim into the uterus. Lack of appropriate consistency in the mucus prevents the sperm from passing the cervix.

Treatment Options for Infertility in Women

• Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) — It is one of the commonly used methods of treating infertility issues. The procedure involves surgically removing the egg which is then fused with sperm in a laboratory environment. The fertilized egg can be inserted back into the woman or a surrogate. In vitro fertilization is one of the highly effective and commonly used assisted reproductive technologies.

• Surgery — Blocked fallopian tube prevents fertilization from taking place. Therefore, surgery is used to unblock the fallopian tubes.

• Surrogacy — It is a method of assisted reproduction used to help individuals who are unable to bear children due to several reasons. Surrogacy is an agreement where a woman agrees to carry the pregnancy on behalf of couples or individuals. The legality of the surrogacy program depends on jurisdiction.
